Spring has arrived amongst us. The days are getting lighter, Easter is approaching and we begin to plan our summer holidays. This is commonly the time of year when I get clients asking “how do I get a toned stomach?”. Well here are a few tips I use to aid in getting some abs!

Nutrition –  Sadly, its true what they say “you cannot out train a bad diet.” My go-to shopping list is focused on green veg, lean meat, eggs, fish and healthy fats such as avocado and natural yoghurt. Here are another few nutritional tips I swear by:

  • NEVER skip meals.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Become aware of the nutritional value of the foods you are eating.

Cardio – Don’t just slave away for half an hour on the treadmill. To rev up your metabolism, aim for interval training. So go hard for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds, then repeat. Or alternate a one minute sprint and one minute of walking. Not fussed on running? You can try this with skipping, swimming, cycling…you name it!

Lifting Weights – Incorporating weights into your workout will help carve out those abs. As this helps the body build muscle. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be and the more fat you burn. Simple maths! So try some squats, deadlifts, bench presses and kettlebell swings that will contribute to gaining that toned tum.

Bloating – Before diagnosed as a celiac, I suffered a bloated tummy for many years due to eating the wrong food for my body.  So I know how uncomfortable and how much of a nuisance a bloated tummy can be! Bloating can come from many things, but is mainly caused by improper digestion, poor food choices and eating too quickly.  Here are a few tips I use to keep the bloat at bay.

  • Drink herbal tea such as peppermint, to help improve your digestion and reduce the bloat.
  • Snack on natural yoghurt that contains probiotic, that helps restore the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut.
  • Avoid chewing gum. As the air gets swallowed when you chew which causes bloating.
  • Avoid drinking carbonated drinks. There’s nothing as quick to cause that gassy feeling!
